King David

KING DAVID

This Jewish art print is centered on King David playing a harp and signing a psalm. It is noted in 1 Samuel 18 that David son of Jesse of Bethlehem was a skillful harpist and that when he entered the service of Saul, he played the harp for Saul to relieve his anxiety. David went on to compose many of the psalms in the Book of Psalms. From the depths of his heart, David composed these prayer songs to express the depths of the human heart in its relationship with God. In the psalms that David composed are found the sublime praise and adoration of God, glorious hymns of thanksgiving to God for all his goodness, and expressions of deep lamentations of one own sins and the collective sins of the people as well as pleas for forgiveness and trust and hope in God’s mercy.

Above the central image is the great shema given to Israel by Moses to worship the one true God with all their heart, mind and strength. Below the central image is the Holy Name of God (YHWH), written in Hebrew letters, which translates to I AM WHO AM. This name was given to Moses by God himself at the burning bush.
